BOSTON — After nailing "Shiver" with his trademark falsetto two songs into last night's opening show of Coldplay's second U.S. tour, Chris Martin greeted the crowd. "Sorry we're a bit later than expected, like three months or something," the singer told fans stuffed into Boston's Avalon Ballroom, referring to a date Coldplay scrapped due to Martin's sore throat. "But it gives you a buildup."

Vaulted expectations probably aren't the best measure of a band such as Coldplay, a group supporting a solitary CD, Parachutes, whose sublime pleasures tend to creep up on listeners. Martin's cheeriness lent levity to the British quartet's 80-minute set, which included all 10 songs from Parachutes and a few new ones with a similar chiming, ethereal sound. He paused to spray his throat at one point, only to play off fans' nascent familiarity with the young band by adding, "I should say this is cocaine, just to spice things up a bit."

Indeed, obliquely assaultive lighting and Martin's light-footed bounce into some of his acoustic guitar strumming didn't divert attention from the quartet's atmospheric focus. Cambridge fan Scott Bryant, 30, said he enjoyed the show for Coldplay's vibe and talent, but added, "I think they're one of those bands where you're almost as well off sitting at home with a bottle of red wine at one in the morning."

The set peaked toward the middle, after Martin moved back to electric piano for "Everything's Not Lost," singing beautifully in harmony with Jon Buckland's floating guitar figures and the band's overall mood enhancement. That song's reverberant fade-out segued into Martin's solo-guitar introduction to "We Never Change." His bare-bones delivery evoked Jeff Buckley as colors swirled delicately on the backdrop.

Martin's falsetto next glided through the hit "Yellow," helped out with more rhythmic muscle and appropriately hued mirror-ball sprays. Coldplay rounded out the show with more subdued song choices. The placement of Martin's solo closer, "See You Soon," seemed well-placed only in terms of sentiment. "It was kind of hard to see the band," Virginia native Susanne Bines, 25, said of the crowded club setting. "It was the kind of concert where I'd like to sit back and just watch."

Coldplay kicked off their sell-out UK tour at Aberdeen Music Hall last night (April 23), introducing three brand new songs to their set. Singer Chris Martin, seemingly back in full voice after the throat problems which dogged their American dates earlier this year, donned an electric guitar "for the first time in living memory in Scotland," for 'Murder', the first new song in the set. The other new songs included 'God Put A Smile Upon Your Face', which had the audience jumping, and 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head', which mirrored the tried and tested Coldplay formula . The band also played as-yet unrecorded songs 'Animals', which opened the set, and 'In My Place', which they have played out live before.

Speaking from the stage, Martin said: "We'll be back here in 20 years time, when every song will have been a Number One single," and two songs further into the set, following 'Don't Panic', threw his acoustic guitar into the crowd, prompting a wrestle between crowd and roadies, with the crowd finally claiming ownership. The band returned for the two-song encore with a cover version of 'You Only Live Twice' and closed the set with a haunting solo acoustic rendition of 'Parachutes' by Martin. The band continue their UK dates at Edinburgh Corn Exchange tonight.

It has been confirmed that Coldplay will join Scottish band Texas and American veterans The Red Hot Chili Peppers at the V2001 in Stafford/Chelmsford this summer. The line-up will alternate between the bands with RHCP headlining Saturday, August 18 in Weston Park, Stafforshire and Sunday, August 19 in Hylands Park, Chelmsford. Coldplay will co-headline with Sharleen Spitteri & co at Hylands on Saturday and Weston on Sunday. RHCP and Texas were the first two bands to confirm their headline appearance while Chris Martin and bandmates announced their decision after bouts of rumours.

Other artists lined-up for this very popular festival include David Gray, Muse, The Foo Fighters, Shed Seven, Divine Comedy, Placebo, Doves, the incredible Starsailor, Grandaddy and JJ72. All these delicious bands should be all the more reason for your ticket purchase after the cancellation of Glastonbury. Tickets go on sale on Saturday morning (April 21st) at 9am. Tickets are priced at £38.50 for day tickets, £66 for weekend tickets without camping and £76 for weekend tickets with camping at either site. It is advised to purchase camping tickets because you'll probably only see specks if you don't.

Also, Coldplay are up for nomination for the 46th Annual Ivor Novello awards on May 24. The nominations for best contemporary song are for U2's 'Beautiful Day', Craig David's 'Seven Days' and David Gray's 'Please Forgive Me'. S Club 7 'Never Had A Dream Come True' go up against the less poppy, Coldplay 'Trouble' and David Gray 'Babylon' for The Best Song Musically and Lyrically Award. Bob the Builder is likely to be honoured as the Best Selling single of last year. The nominations are: All Saints - 'Pure Shores', Bob The Builder - 'Can We Fix It' and Sonique - 'It Feels So Good'. Let's hope the band will not lose out to that clay of a construction worker but follow in the footsteps of last year's big winners - Travis.

After cutting short a brief North American trek in February, Coldplay have announced plans to return to the States later this spring for a more extensive tour, set to kick off May 24 in Boston. The wistful Brit rock group has tapped Modesto, California's Grandaddy to serve as the supporting act, according to Coldplay's label. Coldplay pulled the plug on a New York gig on February 16 — and abandoned shows in Boston (February 17), Toronto (February 20) and Miami (February 23) — after lead singer Chris Martin came down with the flu.

Although Martin has rebounded from that illness, manager Phil Harvey has posted a notice on the band's official Web site saying that Martin has been diagnosed with voice exhaustion, causing Coldplay to put a European tour scheduled for April 1 to 18 on ice. Martin is expected to recover in time for the new dates, and Coldplay still plan to take a short jaunt to America next month to play "Saturday Night Live" on April 7 and a make-up show in New York on April 9.

Coldplay have settled on "Shiver" as the second U.S. single from their debut album, Parachutes, which has sold more than 375,000 copies Stateside. "Shiver" will be released to radio on April 9, and Coldplay have already completed a video for the track with director Grant Gee, who also filmed the Radiohead tour documentary, "Meeting People Is Easy." Dates for Coldplay's upcoming tour, as provided by Capitol Records:

5/24 - Boston, MA @ Avalon
5/30 - Atlanta, GA @ Tabernacle
6/2 - Philadelphia, PA @ Electric Factory
6/4 - Montreal, QC @ Metropolis
6/5 - Toronto, ON @ Warehouse
6/7 - Detroit, MI @ State Theatre
6/8 - Chicago, IL @ Aragon Ballroom
6/10 - Dallas, TX @ Bronco Bowl
6/11 - Austin, TX @ Backyard
6/13 - Denver, CO @ Fillmore
6/14 - Salt Lake City, UT @ TBA
6/16 - Portland, OR @ Arlene Schnitzer Hall
6/17 - Vancouver, BC @ Orpheum Theatre
6/18 - Seattle, WA @ Benaroya Hall
6/20 - San Francisco, CA @ Warfield
6/27 - New York, NY @ Radio City Music Hall

The boys have announced a US tour in May, with GRANDADDY as support. The dates follow their sold-out US jaunt last month. The band will also play New York's Roseland Ballroom on April 9 after having to cancel their Irving Plaza gig last month because of band illness. Their first date in May, at a yet-to-be-confirmed venue in Boston, also makes up for a cancelled appearance. The dates are:

USA New York Roseland Ballroom (April 9) Boston TBA (May 24) Atlanta Tabernacle (30) Philadelphia Electric Factory (June 2) Canada Montreal Metropolis (4) Toronto The Warehouse (5) USA Detroit The State Theatre (7) Chicago Aragorn Ballroom (8) Dallas Bronco Bowl (10) Austin Backyard (11) Denver Fillmore (13) Salt Lake City TBA (14) Portland Arlene Schnitzer Theatre (16) Canada Vancouver Orpheum Theatre (17) Seattle Benaroya Hall (18) San Francisco Warfield (20) New York Radio City Music Hall (27)

It is with the deepest regret that I must announce the cancellation of all Coldplay's forthcoming European tour dates running from april 1 - 18. Chris has recently been diagnosed with voice exhaustion and has been advised by his doctor that attempting the April schedule as it stands would result in total voice loss and could cause permanent damage. I have therefore been forced to cancel the following dates:

April 1 Paris, Bataclan, 2 Bordeaux, Krakatoa, 3 Madrid, Riviera, 11 Munich, Babylon, 13 Berlin, Columbiahalle 14 Hamburg, Docks, 15 Dusseldorf, WDR Festival, 17 Modena, Vox Club, 18 Marselilles Espace Julien

A decision will be made on the rescheduled show in New York on April 9 and the UK dates running from april 23-30 nearer to the time. The band have asked me to pass on their sincere apologies to all those who had already bought tickets for the cancelled shows. Although it will not be possible to reschedule these dates as part of the 'Parachutes' touring campaign, we shall be doing our level best to come back to these areas prior to the release of the next album.

Chris was considerably more composed at the Brits than his showing at the NME Carling Awards earlier in the month, and wisely omitted mention of Craig David this time, having made a gaffe when poking fun a him previously. When he took the stage to accept the Best British Band award, he said: "Shit, shit, shit. This is the weirdest thing that ever happened to us. All around us are bands we used to listen to when we were at school, sitting eating their tea. It's weird, and it's great. Thanks very much."

When he returned to the stage to accept Best Album for "Parachutes", Martin reminisced about a school day when he was supposed to be playing cricket and doing a gig on the same day, but his teacher told him he was no good at cricket and should go off and do the gig. "If we hadn't have done that, I'd probably be playing for Essex or something now. Thank you to him for making us what we are."

Don't Panic is set to be released in Europe as the fourth single from the Parachutes album although it will not receive a commercial release in the UK. The track will be released in most european countries on March 19 with two live b-sides, 'You Only Live Twice' and 'Bigger Stronger', both recorded at the Rockefeller Music Hall in Oslo, Norway last october.

Alternative b-sides will however be available in France, Holland and Denmark. Despite the absence of a commercial release in the UK, the track is already receiving steadily building airplay in the UK with Xfm, Virgin and Radio 1 all adding it to their playlists.

It is anticipated that the release will be widely available on import for British fans. A full UK release was blocked by band and management on the grounds of having exposed the album enough in this country last year. The video clip, directed and produced by Tim Hope, is available to watch in full by visiting the official website.

Coldplay have apologised to fans in the US and Canada for disruption to the tail end of their tour owing to frontman Chris Martin's illness.

As revealed on NME.COM over the weekend, the band had to abandon their gig at New York Irving Plaza on Friday night (February 16) after Martin's voice gave in, due to suffering from a cold and throat infection.

In a statement posted on the band's official website, www.coldplay.com, their manager Phil Harvey said: "On behalf of the band, I would like to apologise for the inevitable disappointment and inconvenience these cancellations caused.

"By way of solace, all I can say is that I am already working on an extensive North American tour for May/June."

The band performed their show at Chicago Metro as planned last night (February 19), and will be flying back to the UK immediately afterwards, with both Martin and guitarist Guy Berryman now suffering from flu. "With two out of four band members down with flu but the equipment already set up in the venue, it was felt that this gig could be done as a final push," Harvey explained.

Ticket holders for shows cancelled at Boston Avalon (February 17), Toronto Guverment (February 20) and Miami Hard Rock Cafe (February 23) are advised to seek refunds at the point of purchase.

As announced on stage, the New York date has been rescheduled for April 9 at Roseland Ballroom, with free entry guaranteed to anyone who collected a relevant replacement ticket at the close of the Irving Plaza show on Friday night. The remaining tickets for the larger capacity venue will go on sale at a date yet to be announced.

Chris Martin has revealed that he has written ten new songs for inclusion on the band's second album.

He has also revealed that the band are due to start work on the album in May. Speaking to Radio 1's Danny O'Connor, he said they'll be joined in the studio once again by co-producer Ken Nelson, who worked with them on 'Parachutes'.

The revelations come as part of a special Radio 1 documentary which airs on 'Lamacq Live' tonight (February 19) at 11pm. The new songs include: 'A Ghost', 'Your Guess Is As Good as Mine', 'Deserter', 'Fingers Crossed' and 'Amsterdam'.

Martin also said he's now firmly focused on getting back into the studio. He added: "I'm a tosser away from music, but in music I'm getting better and better. We're all getting better so I'm really excited about the next record."

Other tunes which may surface on the album include: 'Murder', 'This Hollow Frame', 'In My Place' and two songs which have already become live favourites - 'In Isolation' and 'Animals'.

The band are due to wrap up their current tour with shows tonight in Chicago and tomorrow (February 20) in Toronto - however, it is unknown at press time if the cold that forced Martin to pull the plug on their New York show after two songs on Friday (February 16) and the cancellation of their Boston gig the next night (February 17) would stop Chicago going ahead.

Coldplay return to the US in April for further live dates, and an appearance on David Letterman's prime-time television show.

Coldplay - currently taking the US by storm and out-selling acts including The Charlatans and Stereophonics at venues across the country - have revealed what lay behind their bizarre acceptance speeches at the NME Carling Awards last week.

Speaking in this week's issue of NME, on sale across the UK today (February 14), singer Chris Martin explains why he felt "terrified" at the Awards, and why he went AWOL before the end of the show.

Coldplay won three awards on the day, but Martin made some nervous, confused speeches from the stage and ended up running from the venue in Shoreditch, London.

"I was completely terrified by the whole situation," he told NME.COM. "I got there and I was sat among Oasis, Radiohead and U2 and I felt like this little kid, I didn't know what I was doing. Then I had to get the awards and I was terrified."

There were no problems with the first award for the Radio 1 Evening Session Of The Year, but when he went up to collect the second award for Best New Artist, Martin was visibly nervy and made an ill-advised comment about Craig David and "cauliflower hair".

He explained: "I've been so aware that some people are not as keen on us any more as they were, but I forget that lots of people still like us. I keep thinking lots of people are out to get us, when they aren't. I get paranoid.

"After we got our second award, I thought I had been rude about Bono. I think he's great, but then I think I said I had to go. I just felt I was in some sort of nightmare. I don't really think I said anything, I just imagined it. Maybe I was a bit jet-lagged [the band flew in from Australia that day].

"I wanted to say, 'We're doing well and we've got a new album on the way.' But it came out as this garbled nonsense. I hadn't eaten all day and I had some champagne, when I don't normally drink much. I drank it out of fear. It seems amusing today."

Asked about the Craig David remark, Martin said: "I don't know what that was about. I meant to say Brussels sprouts and it came out as cauliflower. Everything came out wrong."

The Coldplay singer apologised when he went to collect the third award for Best Single, then made a sharp exit before the ceremony finished.

"I just ran off," he told NME.COM. "I ended up hanging around half a mile away around Liverpool Street station. Then my girlfriend found me."

Despite the trauma, Martin added: "I was glad we won three, because it gave me a chance to patch up what I said on the first one. And I respect the NME because it champions the new boys. We've grown up reading it."

Coldplay, whose single 'Yellow' is getting heavy airplay in the US, flew out to Canada the day after the awards for their first North American tour, and as reported on NME.COM on Monday (February 12), got off to a flying start last week with a date at Vancouver Commodore Ballroom on Thursday (February 8), and proceeded to play shows in Seattle, Portland and San Francisco.

The remaining dates are:

Los Angeles Mayan Theater (February 14), New York Irving Plaza (16), Boston Paradise (17), Chicago Metro (19), Toronto Guvernment (20), Miami Crobar (22), Miami Hard Rock Cafe, Gavin Radio Convention (23)

The Commodore Ballroom gig was webcast live by www.hob.com and will be repeated on February 27. We want to know what you think of Coldplay if you've seen them playing live in the US or Canada. Are they living up to the hype? Will they herald a new Britrock invasion? E-mail your comments to us at anthony@nme.com.

Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman has revealed plans to work with AT The Drive-In on a "country record" in El Paso. Berryman said the two bands met while touring Australia as part of the Big Day Out festival last month, and he plans to work with Drive-In guitarist Jim on a "country record" under the name London Country Rebels.

Speaking to Jam music website www.canoe.ca, he said: "They are a great band and such nice guys - they've become good friends of ours. Jim and I are going to make a country record and do some old-school, Flying Burrito Brothers kind of music, probably down there in El Paso, where he lives.

"It's funny, but we both hate people who think we shouldn't like other kinds of music than the stuff we play. They're in it for the music and have so many things going on musically, and so do we."

Although the collaboration may appear unlikely on the surface, speaking to NME.COM following the NME Carling Awards, Coldplay singer Chris Martin also claimed the bands had become friends. He said: "We've just come back off tour in Australia where we have just had the best time.

We were touring with At The Drive-In and PJ Harvey and I just thought 'There's no way we're going to get on with these two bands', because we're so different. But it turned out that there was a whole lot of mutual respect and we actually became friends.

"At The Drive-In might sound heavier than us, but it seemed like we shared the same philosophy about music. We won 'Best New Artist' at the NME Awards, but I'd rather have seen At The Drive-In win."

Fresh from their success at this year's NME Carling Awards, Coldplay launched their first North American tour with back-to-back sold out shows in Vancouver (Thursday February 8), Seattle (February 9) and Portland (February 10) at the weekend.

The UK quartet - whose latest single 'Yellow' is currently getting heavy airplay on modern rock radio stations throughout the US and Canada - kicked off with a full to capacity show at Vancouver Commodore Ballroom.

During the hour-long show singer Chris Martin, obviously pleased with the sell-out crowd, regularly joked with the audience and dedicated 'Shiver' from the band's Mercury Prize nominated debut 'Parachutes' to "Celine Dion, Alanis Morrisette and all the sexy Canadian women out there."

The concert was broadcast live over the internet by House Of Blues and will be repeated on February 27. (For the schedule visit www.hob.com)

Martin was equally upbeat when the band performed the following night at The Showbox in Seattle, entertaining the crowd with jokes about the movie 'Sleepless In Seattle', hanging out with Pearl Jam before adding: "We're not as great as Bon Jovi yet but we will be."

The band has been hotly tipped to make quite an impression stateside and, with a string of sellout shows behind them has already proved more successful than the Stereophonics and Charlatans who had difficulty selling out the same venues on a joint headlining tour last year.

Coldplay continue their tour with a sold out show at San Francisco's historic Fillmore tonight (Monday) and then make stops in Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Chicago and Toronto before rounding it off with a perfomance at Miami Hard Rock Cafe on February 23 as part of the Gavin Radio Convention.

Coldplay have added an extra Manchester show to their April UK tour and have started demoing material for their second album.

The band have added a second date to their mini-UK jaunt at the Manchester Apollo on April 27 after their previously announced date the previous night (April 26) sold out. Tickets for the extra show are on sale now.

A spokesperson for Coldplay told NME.COM that the band have started writing material which is likely to feature on their forthcoming second album.

One new track, 'In My Place', has been a regular live favourite since the end of last year, and was played again Monday night (January 22) at the group's first indoor Australian show at the Sydney Metro nightclub.

The show attracted a stellar line-up of celebrities, including PJ Harvey, At The Drive-In and members of the Black Eyed Peas. The set was concluded by singer Chris Martin covering Burt Bacharach's classic 'What The World Needs Now Is Love' solo on the piano.

This month's issue of Rolling STone has a small article and picture of Coldplay with Moby and Thora Birch.

"That was the most amazing experience," says twenty-one-year-old Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who was buzzed about his band's American debut, at Los Angeles radio station KROQ's annual Christmas show.

"We've always been told that for a British band in America you hace to drive around in a bus for about eight years before people bother to see you. But we were on a revolving stage in front of about 8,000 people."

The boys are riding the success of their single "Yellow" from their debut Parachutes. After their gig, the foursome invited Moby and Thora Birch to the kitschy Hollywood Diner, where portions of Swingers were set.

"We love that film," says Martin. As for Coldplay's LA stay: "We thought we were in a celebrity world."

Chris Martin, lead singer, recently spoke about meeting Liam Gallagher and his view of the new Oasis material. He was asked how the band likes to spend their free time whilst on tour and his reply was:

"We just do whatever, go dancing or go out and pretend to be Liam Gallagher, which is still my favourite occupation. I met Liam at the Shepards Bush gig, he was wicked. He sang me some songs that they're doing, new stuff, and one of them really stuck in my head. I don't want to say too much, I'll probably be shot ... Oasis are going to be back, I've got faith in Oasis"
